Summary of United Electric Plant Tour

Dave Devoll, Donna Shamblin, Director of Quality, and Bob Crawford, Vice President of Operations
On October 28th an APICS Team of 14 met at United Electric Supply Company's New Castle facility for a Business overview and Site tour. Founded in 1965, United Electric is an independent, employee owned regional wholesale distributor of electrical equipment serving the construction and industrial markets in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Northern Virginia.

Our hosts for the evening were CEO, Tom Cloud, and Donna Shamblin, Director of Quality. Tom began the evening with a general overview of the Business. Tom discussed United's performance metrics, continuous improvement steps and focus on Quality to achieve their mission statement, "To deliver exceptional service to our Customers, while maintaining the highest standards for courtesy, knowledge, and ethics." He also reviewed how they used their Disaster Recovery Plan to quickly recover after their New Castle building was destroyed by a tornado in 2004.

Bob Crawford, Vice President of Operations, covered United's Product Groups and Sales Organization. He stressed that the Product Groups are dedicated to ensuring projects run smoothly and that the Sales teams are focused to meet the needs of the Customers.

Perry Hartranft, Corporate Director of Purchasing, went over the responsibilities of the Purchasing Department. His discussion of forecasting, buying and stocking inventory for 15 locations was especially interesting for this APICS group.

Ed Pengelly, Corporate Director of Warehousing, ended the business review with a discussion of the Warehouse roles. Ed covered how bar coding & radio frequency guns are used through out the warehouse operation to optimize speed and efficiency for the Customer.

The evening came to a close with a tour of the warehouse, Customer demonstration area and site store that is open to the general public. An actual Customer order pick was demonstrated in the warehouse.

Special thanks go to Tom and Donna for organizing this event.

Recap of October 14th PDM

DEMEP – Lean Case Studies
Presenters: John Barone, PBA & Jim Jones of DEMEP

The Delaware Manufacturing Extension Partnership (DEMEP) operates in the state of Delaware with federal and state funding, plus the monies it earns at equal shares. Since 1994 it has operated to stave off the outflow of manufacturing jobs to foreign countries as part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Jim and John explained that 71% of manufacturing jobs lost in Delaware came from large firms and that 90% of new jobs in manufacturing come from small firms. In addition they explained that there are 350,000 small manufacturing firms in the US that account for 6 million jobs. Hence, the emphasis in DEMEP is to assist small businesses to become more competitive and thus stem the threat of exporting jobs overseas.

With that objective in mind, DEMEP offers Lean training that is simple, easy to execute, and cost effective. As many in the audience attested, DEMEP does not limit itself to small businesses. A.I. DuPont Hospital, DuPont, Astra Zeneca, and DNREC are just a few examples of larger firms who benefit from their involvement. Jim and John gave examples of Lean training and consulting that made their clients more productive and set them on a path to continuous improvement.

For the APICS member, DEMEP offers training classes and workshops, which satisfy re-certification points. Because they are local, cost effective, and have experts in the field, their offering is hard to miss.
